The first 24 hours when you lose information about your child

Purpose

You are not fixing your whole life in one evening. In the first day, the goal is to stop chaos, avoid making things worse, and regain enough order to act for yourself and your child.

Step 1: pause the reaction

If a message, silence, or refused contact triggers strong emotions, do not answer immediately. Write down what happened, but do not send a message written in anger.

Step 2: write down the fact

Record the date, time, channel, short content of the attempt, and the result. Do not add guesses about the other adult’s motives.

Step 3: check documents

Look for an order, agreement, interim measure, or earlier arrangements about contact and information about the child. If you do not have documents, choose the document-check path.

Step 4: choose a safe channel

If there is no contact ban or approach ban, you may prepare a calm practical message. If a ban exists or you are not sure, do not try to work around it.

What not to do

  • do not ask the child to pass messages between adults,
  • do not publish the case online with the child’s data,
  • do not threaten court in the first emotional message,
  • do not go to a school or home if documents or safety concerns may restrict that.

A good direction

Add one diary entry and prepare one question for a lawyer or a free legal aid point. It will not solve everything, but it helps you return to the role of a parent who acts calmly because the goal is bigger than the conflict.
