Look after yourself so you can be steady for your child
Reading time approx. 2 min · Fundacja One Reason
During a separation or a conflict over custody, it is easy to forget about yourself. It can feel as if there is no room and no time for that. Yet your calm and your strength are exactly what your child needs most. Caring for yourself is not selfish — it is part of caring for your child.
Your child draws calm from you
Children sense tension, even when no one talks about the conflict. When you are steady, your child feels solid ground underfoot. You do not have to be perfect or unshakable. It is enough to be present and predictable.
Someone who is worn out finds patience harder to hold. Looking after yourself is therefore also looking after your bond with your child.
Sleep and the basics
In a crisis, sleep is often the first thing to go, and with it clear thinking and control over emotions. Difficult decisions made after a sleepless night rarely turn out well.
Return to the simple things you can influence:
- regular sleep hours, even if sleep does not come at once
- regular meals and water through the day
- a short walk or movement outdoors
- a moment without the phone and without the conflict
These habits will not settle the dispute, but they will give you the strength to face it.
Do not carry everything alone
You do not have to carry this by yourself. Telling someone you trust how you really feel is not weakness — it is maturity.
Share the weight: let one person help with everyday tasks, and let another simply listen. If the emotions become too much, speaking with a professional is a wise step, not a failure.
Keep the conflict away from your child
Looking after yourself helps you avoid passing the tension on to your child. Your feelings about the other parent are yours — your child should not have to carry them.
Give yourself room for grief and anger out of the child's reach: with a friend, in a journal, with a professional. Your child needs a parent, not an ally in the dispute.
Small steps count
This is not about a great transformation, but about one thing each day that strengthens you. Calm rebuilds slowly, and that is all right.
Rest is not turning away from your child. It is how you stay beside them for the long road, with your strength intact.
